UPA chairperson Mrs. Soni Gndhi inaugurated the country's first open sea bridge (Bandra Worli Mumbai bridge). The bridge would reduce the travel time between the southern part of the metropolis and its western suburbs from the present 60-90 minutes to 6-8 minutes. Also, The 4.8-kilometre long, eight-lane bridge will save around Rs 200-crore a year in vehicle operating cost alone.

The features of the bridge are:
> Automated toll collection system.
> Modern toll plaza of 8 lanes
> Instrumentation,information and guidance, emergency support
> 500 meter,Single tower supported long cable-stayed bridge at Bandra Channel and twin tower will support 350 m cable-stayed bridge near Worli Channel for the each carriageway.
> Total 8 lanes and 2 lanes are dedicated to Buses.
> 20 close circuit(CCTV) camera will secure it.
The cost of illumination of the bridge would be Rs 9 crore and the height of the cable-stayed tower is equal to a
43-storey building.
Earlier, Union Agriculture Minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar proposed to name Bandra-Worli sea bridge after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The proposal was promptly accepted by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan after the formal inauguration of the country's first open sea bridge at the hands of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi here.
